BetterBlocksPhilly is an unprecedented community-driven design demonstration project taking place during DesignPhiladelphia. Together, SOSNA, along with design firms, WRT and Brown & Keener as Event Programmer and Sponsorship Coordinator, hope to foster a more pleasant and safe pedestrian environment.
BetterBlocksPhilly engages residents, artists and designers in creating a living/functioning exhibit of “Complete Street” concepts, with temporary traffic calming and streetscape installations, as well as pop-up shops and community events. The events will take place from October 13th -23rd along one whole city block in the South of South Neighborhood District. BetterBlocks is a national movement to improve neighborhoods.
Street by street, block by block, we can transform a city into a green livable place!
Goals:
- Educate citizens about healthy streetscape design.
- Promote local businesses and the work of local artists and designers.
- Create awareness of traffic calming measures, and pedestrian and bike safety.
- Encourage ideas that will evolve Philadelphia’s neighborhood design ideology.
Organizers:
South of South Neighborhood Association – Project Head
WRT – Design Coordinator
Brown & Keener – Event Programming and Sponsorship Coordinator

This is great, but what about the parking spaces that will be lost? The mid-block cross-walks take away six spaces judging by the ones on Christian between 18th and 17th. Parking is already really tight in this neighborhood.
